Yay for May!!

The end of April and early May are an exciting time for Cape Cod Anglers. There is a lot going on in our local waters. The only caveat is that a lot of us miss out on some of the early action because the weather can be pretty gnarly.

With that said, I have heard from a few folks that the trout bite has quieted. This is a fairly typical pattern. They will settle into their ponds and start feeding again...maybe they are feeding as I write this!

Most of you who have been to the shop know Christian and have had the pleasure of getting to know him through his generosity of time and knowledge. Christian had a great day in one of the brackish Cape waterways landing some really nice sea run trout using metal spoons. 

The saltwater is where we have heard the most activity and variety. Folks have been catching squid with a different squid jig colors and sizes in Nantucket Sound right out of Hyannis as well as Falmouth. Anywhere from 10-25'. 

The tog bite has really picked up. Or perhaps just the reports have been increasing with more anglers getting out on the water to target these green crab loving, fun fighting bottom feeders. This time of year, we usually hear more about Buzzards Bay for the good tog bite, but for the boaters leaving out Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville and Cotuit harbors, they have not been steaming very far at all. The rock piles right in our back yard have been producing some decent size tog in 20-30' of water with green crabs on rigs or jigs.

The migrating striped bass are showing up on the Southside! Get out to the nearest estuary, bay, or harbor. If you know where a herring run feeds from the saltwater, go there! Soft plastics like Albie Snax and Fish Snax XL are working well. Top water is also effective and SP minnows in white or bone are great.

Activity is increasing with each rise of degree on the thermometer. Get out there and enjoy the water — it's the only way you'll get a tight line!
